Priscilla Pamela is Venezuelan born and has been in the U.S. now for 9 years. Her interest in physics started in high school when she decided that she wanted to study astronomy in the United States. She came to Florida International University and was told in order to study astronomy you need physics. She started working on campus for the Nuclear Group here at FIU, and found that her interests shifted to nuclear and away from astronomy. Towards the end of her senior year she worked with Prof. Kramer in the Modeling Classes as a Teacher Assistant. She has had an excellent experience with CHEPREO. She was given the opportunity to pursue physics education research, at which point she decided to make that her graduate field of study.
Her words to someone coming into physics: “it is definitely challenging, but with the support of classmates, and professors and the physics community at FIU in general it is definitely a rewarding experience”.
What do you want to do with your career? “I want to learn to teach others how to teach physics better in the sciences”.
“I think the community we are building is a very female friendly place. And I hope that it can help increase the number of female students interested in physics.”
Her thoughts about the PLC: “Having the physics learning center is like having a home for all physics students. We live here, eat here, some people sleep here, we clean it, and we are very protective of it. The word has spread through the campus that you can find a physics student here practically 24/7 to answer your questions about physics.”
