The 2nd Southeastern CMS Physics Analysis Workshop was held in Miami at the FIU campus the 7-9 of February, 2007. The purpose of the workshop series is to develop collaborative relationships between CMS physicist that have regional ties, share resources and expertise and/or have other common interests. The workshops have been organized to both showcase activities that enable or enhance CMS physics analysis and hold tutorials that describe how to actually do analysis at CMS.
The February workshop was divided into presentations focused on physics analysis activities and tutorials that dealt with using the CMS software and resources. The presentations were held in the mornings and the tutorials where held in the afternoons and on the third day. The tutorials described how to use the new CMSSW framework, with exercises designed to help the uninitiated with the creation, compilation and running of CMS analysis. There were also exercises that showed participants how to submit jobs to the Grid and how to use a new storage system developed by collaborators at Vanderbilt and UT Knoxville. All participants were given access to Tier2 and Tier3 resources in Florida.
The morning presentations included talks from UF, FSU and our Brazilian colleagues at UERJ and UNESP. The topics ranged from recent work on missing Et and particle flow to the potential for vector boson scattering and EWSB at CMS. We also learned about work being done by the ECAL group from FSU. From UESP we learned of their interest and strong phenomenology background in Universal Extra Dimensions. This is something that is also of interest to theorist and experimentalist working on CMS at UF.
Overall the workshop was largely successful. Approximately 25 people attended with representatives from all four of the CMS institutions in Florida UF, FIT, FIU, UF and FSU as well as from Vanderbilt and two Brazilian institutes UESP and UERJ. The general consensus was that the three days spent at FIU where interesting and useful; particularly so for those who are just getting started with CMS analysis in the new framework. The exercises were generally considered to be well organized and relevant. The intimate nature of the workshop was of great benefit to the participants as it facilitated the exchange of information between those with varying degrees of expertise with the new CMSSW framework.
Finally it was generally agreed that we should continue the workshop series, evolving the material content of the tutorials and the presentations as the expertise and involvement of the participants in CMS itself evolves. It is envisioned that these tutorials together with the presentations and material presented at the first workshop will form a bases for developing closer ties between of our communities within CMS as we learn and move forward with the arrival of first data at the end of 2007. |
