FIU hosted two Physics Modeling Workshops this summer from July 12 through July 30, 2004. Physics Modeling is a structured inquiry approach to physics instruction that incorporates computer technology and insights from physics education research that seeks to create autonomous learners.

This successful method was developed by David Hestenes at Arizona State University (modeling.asu.edu) and has spread across the country with over 1,000 physics teachers receiving training. Emphasis is placed on the use of basic models and modeling in physics processes. Participants develop skills in fostering scientific discourse and presentation and in assessment of student learning.

18 teachers will attend each workshop as well as graduate and undergraduate students and physics faculty. Each workshop is led by 2 teachers trained by the ASU group and will be held on the University Park campus. The teachers will bring the experiences back to their classrooms and also form the nucleus of a local learning community that will be supported by FIU. The institute is sponsored by CHEPREO.
