Education Outreach
CHEPREO integrates successful education programs (Hestenes Modeling, and QuarkNet) into one cohesive unit to meet its vision. The programs have been chosen not only because of their widespread success, but because they are appropriate for our goals.
Hestenes Modeling is the exemplar in physics instruction, COMAP provides for a coherent modeling approach in mathematics for middle school through college levels, and QuarkNet provides an excellent channel to particle physics research and community building.
The FIU College of Education has embraced modeling as a foundation of their teacher programs, establishing Modeling Workshop participation as a requirement for their Mathematics & Science Professional Development Program (MSPD) leaders.
The University of Florida assumes a leadership role with FIU to develop grid computing modeling techniques for integration into the physics education curriculum through the UF IT coordinator position and the iVDGL educational outreach agenda. The CMS modeling workshops immerse the FIU faculty and students in modeling, with extra spaces allocated for local teachers.
The grid computing and advanced networking technologies which enable the CMS HEP research are promoted, experienced, and used by the participants, furthering these fields as well as physics and science education. These, along with the FIU College of Education’s experience and established relationships and the Physics Department’s research and education experience, form the basis for the educational outreach efforts.
